In 2024 and 2025, the United States directly bombed Yemen without congressional authorization. These unlawful attacks targeted critical areas such as Hodeida Port City– servicing 80% of Yemen’s population – and the Hezyez electricity plant in Sana’a.

We are at a pivotal moment in the movement to halt illegal weapons sales
Action Corps Vermont team members spoke with Sen. Bernie Sanders in August 2023 at an event in their state. They delivered a petition to the senator calling on him to co-sponsor a resolution to investigate Saudi Arabia’s human rights violations in Yemen, pursuant to Section 502B of the U.S. Foreign Assistance Act, in light of U.S. military assistance to Saudi Arabia. Shortly after, Bernie co-sponsored the bipartisan resolution.
In December, he introduced his own 502B resolution re: Israel, making history in bringing this legislation to the floor of the U.S. Senate. Although his bill was tabled, it was an important step forward. Action Corps Vermont helped familiarize the senator with this underutilized tool in U.S. law to enforce human rights.
Months later, in the summer of 2024, Action Corps Vermont activists and allies secured Senator Bernie Sanders’ public commitment in Brattleboro to introduce a Joint Resolution of Disapproval (JRD) to block $20 billion in arms sales to the Israeli government. This resolution challenged the administration’s unauthorized arms sales, reinforcing Congress’s constitutional authority over war and peace.
Following the introduction of the JRD, Action Corps mobilized nationwide to generate support for the vote, which led to an unprecedented result: more than half of Senate Democrats voted in favor of the resolution. This marked a critical step toward stopping illegal arms sales and protecting U.S. law.
